This week’s installment of Squirrel Wednesday is extra-special, because it falls on 2009’s Squirrel Appreciation Day! According to the interwebs, SAD was established in 2001 by Christy Hargrove, a wildlife rehabilitator in Asheville, NC. [Seriously, this is a state that loves its squirrels!] According to this site, SAD is a good day to take a few minutes to learn a little more about the fluffy-tailed critters who scamper among us and maybe to set out a treat or two during this lean season of theirs. I have a handful of stale cookies that I’ve been setting aside for this day that I’m sure the two squirrels living in our yard will be happy to see tomorrow morning. If any of you out there think of it, try to do your little gray (or red, black, or white) friends a little kindness on January 21.
